I attend Rutgers University in New Brunswick, and was previously a Biology major on the pre-med track (I have now switched to Computer science), and have taken Expository Writing, Chemistry as well as honors level Physics. I have a strong background in Math, Science, and Writing, and have tutoring experience with high school students, and I was also a Learning Assistant for Physics in which I helped students with challenging questions. Finally, I took a 3 credit class which focused on the most efficient tutoring and teaching strategies. My tutoring philosophy consists of dialogic discourse, an important concept in teaching and pedagogy. Rather than directly giving answers I will guide the student toward the solution, which will foster critical thinking skills, something the student can use and implement in his or her own studying. I want the student to really understand the material so they can be truly successful in the class. My tutoring sessions will be geared toward what concepts the student needs help on the most. I will begin with addressing which areas the student wants to improve on; I will then reinforce those concepts by reteaching briefly, and then I will come up with a few practice questions which the student will work through. This will help the student become comfortable with the concepts. If the student informs before the session which areas he or she is uncomfortable with, I will prepare a question packet which I think is representative of the material in advance so that during the tutoring session we can work through the questions together. For students who need help with writing, I will teach them how to meticulously edit their writing for both content and grammar, and I will teach them strategies to make their writing more clear, concise, and elegant. For reference: SAT score for Math was 780. SAT Math level 2 subject test score was 790. SAT score for Writing was 670.
